About this event
Of course, every album is a “Gentleman album.” But with GRATITUDE, for the first time in a long while, there was no plan, no ego, and no pressure. Just the real urge to make these songs.
When I realized that a person only lives about 4,000 weeks if they reach the age of 80, it was a shock. I’m 51 now — that’s roughly 30 summers left. This realization came at a time when, after many years of chart success, awards, TV show appearances, and one tour after another, things weren’t running as smoothly anymore and I was given an unexpected break that made me think. The rush — which I enjoyed a lot, though it can be exhausting — faded, and I found myself facing the question of what comes next. Today I would call it “healthy downsizing,” but back then it was unfamiliar. Fortunately, I’ve always been a family person and can totally enjoy everyday life. I am completely happy taking my daughter to school, going grocery shopping, having an afternoon nap, reading a book, walking the dog, watering the plants in the evening, and simply having time. That’s when I thought: I don’t have to do this.
That was probably the key to the door opening again eventually and my urge to write songs returning. Under one condition: I decided to only do things I genuinely feel like doing — without anyone interfering. Maybe it won’t be as big as it used to be — but that actually feels good, because the people who love it will really love it. I want to make music because it’s fun, not because I need to fulfill contracts or expectations.
The fact that I’ve been doing this for so long and managed to rediscover the joy makes me grateful. That I can allow vulnerability and that I don’t define myself through the “Gentleman thing” — that I don’t care whether my album charts when my daughter runs into my arms. GRATITUDE is about becoming aware of impermanence. About appreciating the small things and the rare happiness of being fully in the moment. Music, to me, is the art form that makes the moment instantly tangible.
This essence is captured in UNITY IS EVERYTHING: Love when my brother keeps me central – I’m in a battle with myself and it is mental. This song is important to me because it comes very close to what I mean. It is possible to accept what’s happening in the world without losing hope. Music can stop the downward spiral and reconcile us. Our DNA is 99% the same — it makes no sense that we feel so alien to one another. I long for harmony without rose-colored glasses, and mental freedom can help with that. WHAT IF plays with perspective and turns everything upside down: What if I’ve never made a mistake? What if wrong is the right and mediocre is great? What if life is a prison and with death you escape? But it can’t work without action: WILDFIRE, created with Clayton Morrison and Michael Patrick Kelly, is a tribute to unspectacular gestures that make a difference: Spread love like a wildfire — helping others can free us from our imaginary prison, broaden our perspective, and so much comes back in return. I don’t want to put things off anymore, and I motivate myself in BYPASS THE SORROW as well: It’s better if you start today and do it now, then you don’t have to worry about tomorrow, just bypass the sorrow. With vocals by Nico Santos and buttery-smooth dancehall beats.
I am grateful for friendship — which the Collie Buddz feature FRIENDS is about — for humanity, and for my relationship with my wife Tamika. After 20 years of marriage, she is still my anchor, and 22 years after Intoxication, I’ve now dedicated I’LL BE THERE to her — expanded with a feature by Melekú. But there is something greater than all of us, and LION gives it a sound: When I look at the stars from the studio, I sense a presence that invites you to make yourself small and give space to serenity. You marvel and let yourself flow with it. In the end, everyone must find their own strength, and WARRIOR fights its way forward with a hard-hitting riddim — toward stability and self-confidence.
GRATITUDE is a pure reggae album that goes back to my early records and still has a completely free vibe. It’s an anti-concept album that blends tradition and modernity, with songs that last exactly as long as they need to, and with as many features as simply feel amazing. Collaborations range from Trinidad and Tobago with Queen Omega, and Jamaica with “The Prophet” Capleton, to US artist Collie Buddz, and to Nico Santos and my good friend Michael Patrick Kelly. Even the production itself was a global affair: We recorded in Mallorca, Jamaica, and Miami, and mixed and mastered in Miami and Hamburg. My cocreators included Keely, Clayton Morrison, and Daddy Rings; production was handled by Don Corleon, Jopez, and Clayton Hamilton. It was Clayton who, on the very first day in the studio, said something to me that has remained the inspiration and motivation for GRATITUDE to this day: “Let’s have fun again!”
Gentleman brought reggae from Germany to the international stage. For thirty years, the Cologne-born artist has been making music history as the only European to celebrate worldwide success with authentic riddims. With gold and platinum #1 albums such as Confidence (2004) and Diversity (2010), twenty Top 100 singles, 1.2 million monthly Spotify listeners and another 1.5 million followers across all platforms, tours through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the US, South America and Africa, collaborations with the likes of Sean Paul, Ky-Mani Marley, Aloe Blacc, Shaggy, and Pink, as well as the first-ever MTV Unplugged production for a reggae artist, Gentleman has long been a globally recognized superstar of the genre.
After his early LPs helped define the reggae sound around the turn of the millennium and gave a whole generation its own voice, GENTLEMAN will release his ninth studio album, GRATITUDE, in 2026. The 18 new tracks were created in Mallorca, Jamaica, and Miami, together with Jamaican producer Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett, who also worked on Intoxication and Diversity and is known for his work with artists like Rihanna, Sean Paul, Nicki Minaj, and Cardi B.
